Community Engagement Around Historic Preservation, Planning and Zoning Department, City of Austin
The City of Austin received a grand to increase the number of listings associated with communities that are underrepresented in the National Register of Historic Places. Community engagement was a key part of the project, as East Austin communities have long memories about historically discriminatory municipal policies. Community engagement focused on developing an understanding of why historic preservation matters, the intersection of preservation and community stability, and benefits of designation at the national and local levels. Deliverables included outreach, community meetings, and production of bilingual educational materials related to historic preservation.
